riverwalks and love songs

a pop song, a golf course, and a girl I can’t forget

I spent most of this week in San Antonio—suit on, business cards in hand, walking the Riverwalk between meetings. There’s something surreal about toggling between two worlds like that. One moment I’m talking capital markets and asset allocation… the next, I’m ducking into a quiet bar, scribbling lyric ideas into my phone.

I took some photos while I was there—glimpses of the Riverwalk, morning light on the hotel window, a quiet moment in a golf cart between meetings. (You’ll see them scattered through this letter.)

There’s a weird magic in those in-between moments.
The pause between appointments. The silence after the pitch. The long walk back to the car when you’re still half-lost in a melody that won’t leave you alone.

That’s where a lot of my songs begin.
Not in the studio.
In the in-between.

There’s a song I want to tell you about. I uploaded it to Patreon this weekend. It’s called “Back Nine.”

It started as a joke, honestly.
I was thinking about how many corporate guys I know schedule “golf meetings” as an excuse to avoid the office. And how much time gets spent out there on the course—thinking, talking, scheming, escaping.

Somewhere along the way, the song stopped being funny.
It became a little cinematic. A little romantic. A little too close to home.

It’s about the ninth hole, and the girl you can’t stop thinking about.
It’s about a sunny afternoon when everything feels possible—even if nothing is actually happening.
It’s a pop song. But it’s got a heart under it.

And I think you might like it.

There’s something beautiful about songs like that.
The ones that sneak up on you.
The ones you write quickly and quietly because they weren’t supposed to be anything important.
And then suddenly… they are.

I don’t always share songs before they’re released publicly. But I since you’re on this newsletter I wanted you to hear this one first.

It’s just a moment.
But maybe it’ll remind you of someone. Or some summer.
Maybe it’ll make you smile a little.

See you next Sunday,

Roman
